In my "day job" I'm an Occupational Therapist! What is OT? We work with people in all areas of life to be able to actively perform and thrive in the activities they wish to accomplish everyday. Completing these tasks with the highest level of independence possible is the ultimate goal. We are part of the rehab teams working with people recovering from a physical injury, mental illness, addiction/ substance abuse, the elderly experiencing changes in ability and children in order to optimize home and school experience (Just to name a few!)
What does this mean for dance? The heavy emphasis on anatomy and kinesiology (the way the body moves) allows me to apply more knowledge to the dance experience! Occupational therapy also focuses on the use of mindfulness practices. Mindfulness in dance allows us to be present in our movement without judgement. We can experience dance as expression, art and relaxation/stress reduction more fully!
